Utilities for accessing WebDAV folders via network drive.

(I) Because SSL is enabled on all WebDAV folders on JH147. Users can no longer map a network drive directly or use NET USE command to access these WebDAV folders. Here are two good utilities to work around. Both should work on WinXP/2000/98.

(II) Use Novell's Net Drive.

Download the program from HERE. Double click and follow the instructions to install the program. Once the program is installed, open the program (Start->Programs->NetDrive->NetDrive) and click new site.

To map a network drive to a WebDAV folder, input the https:// address for the WebDAV folder you want to access. Leave the server type as default (WebDAV). Choose a drive letter (for example, if your GroupWise archive is on your U: drive on JH147, you may want to choose drive letter as U: if you want to open the archive at home). Uncheck the Anonymous/Public Logon checkbox, and input your Hopkins domain username and password. Click Connect. Your setup screen should look like this:

If you do not want to connect to this drive at login, uncheck the "Connect at Login/Startup" box.

To access to chow via FTP AND make your chow home directory as a network drive on your PC: input the ftp://chow.mat.jhu.edu as the URL. Change the server type to FTP. Choose a drive letter. Uncheck the Anonymous/Public Logon checkbox, and input your chow username and password. Click Connect. Your setup screen should look like this:

In both cases you will see the WebDAV folder or your chow home directory as a network drive if you open "My Computer". This is very convenient, especially for users who want to edit chow files on their home PC. Besides file copying and editing, you can also typeset TeX files online.

Note: It is recommended that users disconnect all these network drives before shut down/hibernate their computers.

(III) Use Virtual Private Network (VPN) client to connect to Hopkins domain first.

(1). Install the VPN client from JHSecure- Hopkins' Remote Access Solution.
Go to jhed.jhu.edu. Click login. Use you JHED Login ID (LID) and password to log in. Then click the "VPN Help" link. From there you might want to click the VPN FAQ link first to go through the help page before you click the download page. You need to input your JHED LID again before you download. After downloading, install the program. Refer to the FAQ page whenever in doubt during installation (especially Windows XP PC).

Note that this client also has Mac or Linux version.

(2). After the installation. Open the program (Start->Programs->JHSecure->VPNDialer) and click connect. You should see that your JHED LID is already showing. Input your password and you will be connected to the Hopkins domain. In particular you will be able to map a network drive directly (e.g., \\jh147\user_name$), or use net use command (see sample batch file). You don't need to use WebDAV address in this case.

Note: If your mail client uses SMTP mail server from your ISP, you may have problem sending email while using this VPN connection. If you use mail server from JHU, there should be no problem.
