Information on Departmental Windows 2000 server

General information

Server name: jh147.mat.jhu.edu (or www.mathematics.jhu.edu)   IP address: 128.220.242.95.

Access server using your domain account

(12/5/03) Important: Please start using WIN domain account. Hopkins domain accounts will expire after January 31, 2004.

Using WIN domain username: every time you are asked for username and password, use win\user_name as username. Here user_name is your WIN domain account username, which is the same as your JHED LID.

Map a drive to JH147 when at school:  Right click My Computer, choose "Map Network Drive". Take the default drive letter. Use the path: \\jh147\user_name$.  Do not forget the $ sign. Uncheck "Reconnect at logon". Click Finish.

(1/14/04) Network drive mapping path change:  For users whose WIN domain usernames are different from their HOPKINS domain usernames, the path for network drive mapping to JH147 has been changed. The new path is \\jh147\user_name$ where again user_name is WIN domain username.

Connecting through wireless: Users using wireless connection at school can not map a drive directly to JH147. You need to use WebDAV.

How to use WebDAV to access U: drive off campus or through wireless connection on campus

(3/24/03) Important reminder: SSL is enabled  on all WebDAV folders on JH147. All communications are encrypted using a 128-bit version of  Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to protect your passwords and usernames. Users need to use https:// addresses to access WebDAV folders. Old http:// addresses will no longer work.

This change only applies to WebDAV part of JH147. It does not change the web server address or regular network drive mapping.

(I) Access through web browser (works for all browsers with 128-bit encryption):

Open the browser. Type in the address https://www.mathematics.jhu.edu/users/user_nameInput WIN domain username and password when prompted.

Example: https://www.mathematics.jhu.edu/users/jkong2, username: win\jkong2

This way you can view or download documents from your U: drive, but you can not make changes.

Note: Using IP address instead of the DNS name will bring on an alert screen for the SSL Certificate, so it is not recommended.

(II) Access through web folder.

You can create a web folder with the https:// address above. This way you will be able to make changes, copy or move documents in and out of your U: drive. You can edit your MS Office documents online. However you can not typeset TeX files online. To create a web folder:

WinXP/Win2000: double click My Network Spaces icon on the desktop. In Network Tasks column. click Add a network place. Add Network Place Wizard will start. Follow instructions.

WinNT: Open Windows Explorer. (Right click My Computer icon, choose Explore.) Double click Web Folders, on the right side of screen, double click Add Web Folder. Follow instructions.

Win98: Same as Win NT. If you don't see Web Folders icon, then you need to install Web Folders. See here

You will be asked for username and password if you open or edit documents. (No problem when you download or upload documents.)

(III) NET USE: There are some utilities to use "Map a Network Drive" or "NET USE" command for WebDAV access. Here is a help file.

How to share a folder in U drive

Go to the folder you want to share with, right click and choose Property | Security | Permissions. Click Add. In the next screen choose Show Users. Now find the userid of the person you want to share the folder with, and choose the type of access. Click OK. In the previous screen click Replace Permissions on Subdirectories if you want to share subfolders also. Click OK.

Users with appropriate rights can access the shared folder through network drive mapping when at school, or use WebDAV. The path for WebDAV is:

https://www.mathematics.jhu.edu/users/user_name/folder_name
