JHU
Mathematics …. A whole new level of perception
Welcome
to Johns Hopkins University !
-
The
first University in the United States to have a department of Mathematics in the
modern sense, (founded in 1878 by J. J. Sylvester)
In
the Mathematics Department at Johns Hopkins our main goal is for you to broaden
your awareness by exploring new ways of thought.
As
undergraduates, we encourage you to experience the kind of mathematics that
drove many of mathematicians before you. Courses such as number theory,
differential geometry, dynamical systems and topology introduce mathematics in
its purest form; of rigorous and independent reasoning, of using abstract ideas
to solve concrete problems. We also understand the importance of the
various applications of mathematics, requiring our undergraduates to take at
least two terms of these applications
(for
details click on “Major/Minor
in Mathematics”) .
We
invite you to explore all that our department has to offer, please click on the
menu bar for answers to specific questions and contact information.
Come
to JHU to experience a whole new level of perception !
